How long can a UPS actually last during the power outage?

A UPS is not a generator; its purpose is to “give you time to shut down safely,” not to provide power for an extended period. Battery life is typically only 5–30 minutes, depending on battery capacity and load size. An entry-level 500VA UPS can provide 15–30 minutes of backup power, which is sufficient to save data and shut down the system safely. If you need extended power, you must use a generator or solar energy storage system; the UPS merely bridges the
few-second “gap” while the generator starts up.

Are lead-acid or lithium-ion batteries more suitable for a UPS?

Lead-acid batteries remain the mainstream choice and are irreplaceable, particularly in industrial settings, data centers, and harsh overseas operating environments. The key reasons for this are their high safety, mature technology, native compatibility with existing UPS charging architectures, and lower total cost of ownership.

Although lithium-ion batteries offer advantages such as compact size and long cycle life (1,000–1,200 cycles vs. approximately 300 cycles for lead-acid batteries), they cost 3–5 times as much as lead-acid batteries. Furthermore, they are extremely temperature-sensitive and must rely on temperature-controlled cabinets and BMS management; as a result, they are prone to malfunctions in outdoor or factory workshop environments in Africa where temperature control is unavailable. What are the signs that it’s time to replace the battery?

If two or more of these four key signs are present, don’t delay: 1. Discharge time has significantly shortened (from 30 minutes to 5–10 minutes, indicating capacity has dropped below 50%); 2. Self-test or discharge test fails (a “battery failure” alert from the UPS is not a false alarm); 3. Batteries are bulging, leaking, or have deformed casings (dangerous conditions with a fire risk—must be replaced immediately); 4. Installed for more than 4 years and never replaced (preventive replacement recommended). When replacing, the entire set must be replaced with batteries of the same manufacturer and model; mixing new and old batteries is strictly prohibited—differences in internal resistance will cause the new batteries to be drained by the old ones.
