Both air conditioning fans and pumps are inductive loads, which generate inrush currents during startup—typically more than twice the rated current.
For a UPS to accommodate such inrush currents, the options are either to proportionally scale up the UPS capacity or to rely on the surge withstand capability of the UPS inverter to absorb the impact.
Scaling up the UPS capacity proportionally would multiply the system cost, while resulting in a low load rate, poor efficiency, and severe energy waste during normal operation.
High-frequency or modular UPS systems are inherently designed for IT equipment in data rooms, and since IT equipment generates no inrush current at startup, these UPS types have relatively weak surge withstand and overload capabilities.
When carrying inductive loads such as air conditioning fans and pumps, simultaneous load startup can easily cause UPS inverter overload or failure, which may in turn lead to a complete power outage of downstream loads (air conditioning units), hardware damage to the UPS itself, and consequently serious economic losses.
Therefore, for continuous cooling requirements in data centers, it is recommended to use industrial-frequency UPS units to carry such loads.
Application Scenarios
At present, in addition to IT loads, hospitals have a growing number of medical devices that require UPS power support, such as MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), ultrasound (B-ultrasound), and CT scanners. On the one hand, such devices generate inrush currents at the moment of startup; on the other hand, they impose extremely stringent requirements on power supply quality, including harmonic distortion and high-frequency harmonic interference. Therefore, fixed-frequency (industrial-frequency) UPS units are highly suitable for such application scenarios.
2. Manufacturing Scenarios
In manufacturing scenarios, production lines, control systems, and most other equipment consist of motor-type loads, which are subject to frequent starting surges. Meanwhile, the on-site environment differs significantly from that of an IT data room.
Therefore, industrial-frequency UPS units equipped with an isolation transformer are required for protection. In addition, the structure of fixed-frequency UPS units ensures stronger environmental adaptability, making them more suitable for production sites.
